Alibaba group

Alibaba Group is a Chinese e-commerce company that has custumer-to-customer, business-to-customer, and business-to-business marketplaces. It also provides payment services, cloud computing services, and others.

The group was founded in 1999 by Jack Ma. Alibaba.com was launched as a B2B marketplace to connect Chinese manufacturers with overseas buyers.

Alibaba Group went public on 19 September 2014 in New York Stock Exchange as BABA. It is currently world's largest retailer and one of the largest internet companies. Yet compared to Amazon, Alibaba holds no inventory and has no warehouses - 100% of sales on their platforms are from marketplace sellers.

They run:

  • Alibaba.com for business-to-business trading.
  • Taobao for consumer-to-consumer trading, similar to eBay.com. Launched in 2003.
  • Tmall.com for business-to-consumer shopping, similar to Amazon.com. Launched in April 2008. More than 50% of Chinese e-commerce sales are through Tmall.com.
  • Alipay, an online payment platform, similar to PayPal.
  • AliExpress, an online retail service made up of mostly Chinese businesses offering products to international buyers. Lunached in 2010.
