We have developed proprietary technology allowing us to monitor and analyze world's dominant e-commerce platforms like Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Etsy, etc. This has enabled us to build the largest e-commerce data set including millions of sellers across all major marketplaces.
Amazon Handmade was launched in October 2015, exactly two years ago. The products on Amazon Handmade are listed by 13,547 sellers based on our research. Compared to 1,003,822 sellers with products listed on Etsy. If all Amazon Handmade sellers were one seller, the number of seller feedback reviews received by it would make that seller the number one seller on Amazon.com marketplace.
After launching the electronics category which offers televisions, cell phones and laptops, the Amazon Brazil marketplace overnight added 300 new sellers. Launched in 2012 as a Kindle store, Amazon Brazil opened a marketplace for third-party sellers in April. Since then the marketplace grew to just over 1,400 sellers.
"There are currently more than 2 million sellers on Amazon worldwide" is the most common description of the Amazon Marketplace. However not only is it not true this figure is also irrelevant. Last week Walmart passed the milestone of 15,000 Walmart marketplace sellers. On average a seller has 2,550 products listed for sale. And yet it is hard to know what any of these mean in terms of the potential of the marketplace since none of these figures are performance related.
39% percent of sellers received half or more of their feedback in a single marketplace out of those with feedback in all European marketplaces. So while it is true that most European sellers sell in more than one marketplace, not all of them do as successfully internationally as in their home marketplace.
Over 21,000 scam sellers were detected in the last 12 months. Those sellers on Amazon.com collectively received close to one million negative reviews. Since not all customers leave a seller review - even if the experience was bad - the number of orders affected by this issue is undoubtedly even larger. Amazon has so far not taken any action, which is arguably disappointing.
We found that out of the Top 100,000 Amazon.com sellers, just 283 have committed to the program. Meaning for majority of the products they offer Prime shipping, and the shipping is not done by FBA. Seller Fulfilled Prime (SFP) launched in 2015 allows marketplace sellers to offer Prime two-day shipping without using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).
Based on our research since the start of the year Etsy has had half a million new sellers join the marketplace. 494,123 to be exact. This amounts to over 70,000 new shops every month, making 2017 the fastest growing year so far.
A minor misconception about marketplaces is that sellers are contempt with its model. Instead sellers are spending increasing effort to avoid the "marketplace", all to avoid having competition. 27 percent of the top 1,000 sellers, 37 percent of the top 10,000 sellers, and 44 percent of the top 100,000 sellers are selling 3 brands or less.
One of the most commonly asked questions about the Amazon marketplace, apart from how many sellers are selling on the platform, is how many sellers have sales greater than $100 million, or more than $1 million. We finally wanted to tackle this question.
